Application Rate

As a general rule of thumb, you want to apply 1/4″ or roughly 1 ton per 1,000 square feet. When leveling, you may apply a depth of up to 1/2″ to ruts or low areas. You should be careful not to go any deeper though, as grass will struggle to come back through. Leveling your lawn does not mean changing its topography. Any variations larger than 1/2″ are best addressed by applying multiple applications over time. One cubic yard of mix weighs around 1.3 tons, so a safe rate to apply for maintenance is 0.75-0.8 bags per 1,000 square feet. For first application, or where more leveling is required, an even easier conversion of 1 bag per 1,000 square feet should be used. In general, we recommend using this rate if you want extra material for touch ups or additional applications.

Application Instructions

Leveling mix should be applied after scalping (bermudas and zoysias) to expose the stems of your grass blades, followed by core aeration. This should be done in the spring or early summer, as your lawn is starting to green up. You may scalp your lawn before aerating, but never top dress until your lawn is exiting dormancy. Aerating your lawn prior to applying this mix is one of the most important steps and should not be skipped. Once spread, it is recommended to use a drag mat to ensure the core penetration of the sand and nutrients as well as the most level surface possible.

Scalping, aerating, and top dressing your lawn is one of the best methods for maintaining your yard at a golf course-level quality.  It can also be back breaking work and depending on the size and condition of your lawn can require specialized equipment. Level Lawns specializes in these services and can also provide the end to end solution, as well as options to apply other important minerals post application to encourage thick, new growth.
